Animals with unique evolutionary adaptations not only survive in challenging environments but also play crucial roles in sustaining entire ecosystems. The Pleistocene Giants – Elephants and Climate Change
Elephants are often referred to as "ecosystem engineers" due to their ability to shape landscapes and maintain biodiversity. Their long-distance migrations and physical interactions with their environment play a pivotal role in preventing forests from overtaking savannas. When elephants move through forests and savannas, they knock down trees, which preserves habitats for species that depend on open landscapes.
